Combining storytelling with practicality is my favorite way to create. I like to look at something and imagine who would use this and for what? What is this a symbol of? In what setting would this fit? These dragon mugs were a product of this thought process. I wanted them to be more rigid and repetitive in form, with the schematic feet and consistent scales, to feel almost as if they were carved from wood, like the ship would be. The ship challenged me in terms of form as I had never made anything like it. But once the texture lines were added and the glaze settled in, it was brought to life.

My hope is to access that childlike imagination similar to that of when you pick up a stick and suddenly it’s a sword. To drink from the mug and picture yourself in another time or to look at the ship in the middle of the table and longing to go on an adventure of your own.
