A TOUCH OF TEXTURE

By MEI MEI EDGAR

With this series of bowls, I wanted to explore how different glazes would react to the different textures on each bowl. I used a pinching method around the pieces to create depth for the glaze to react. Our gas kiln goes up to cone 10, which is about 2381 degrees Fahrenheit, and at that temperature, you don’t often know how the glazes will run or react to the pieces. It reminds me of Christmas: opening a gift that you might have an idea of but are not positive about. That's how our glazes work. I can put a glaze on a piece, but I am not always guaranteed that it will react perfectly. Thankfully, my bowls turned out to be a success. I often find myself feeling different textures that surround my daily life, exploring which ones could be the texture that I incorporate into my next series.
